ENDOVENOUS LASER TREATMENT

Endovenous Laser Treatment

What is EVLT

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) is a treatment alternative to surgical stripping of the greater saphenous vein. A small laser fiber is inserted, usually through a needle stick in the skin, into the damaged vein. Before treatment, an ultrasound will be needed to examine the affected veins.

Pulses of laser light and heat energy are delivered inside the vein, which causes the vein to collapse and seal shut. The procedure can usually be done in the office under local anesthetic and generally takes less than an hour to complete. This allows the patient to be pain-free and makes the recovery time much shorter. Most patients generally return to work in as little as 1 to 2 days.

Following the procedure, a compression bandage and hose are applied on the treated leg for 3 days. Immediate walking is encouraged, as this activity helps these areas to heal. Patients typically do not have any symptoms of pain, bruising, or scarring. Endovenous Laser Treatment is FDA-approved for the treatment of the greater saphenous vein and is covered by most insurance plans.
