LEG ULCERS

Leg Ulcers

What Are Leg Ulcers

Leg ulcers are breaks in the skin on the leg. This opening allows for air, bacteria, and other irritants to enter the lesion. Pain, swelling, and redness are all symptoms, but the severity ranges depending on size and initial treatment.

Most people will see these clear and heal quickly, with a week or two being standard. However, chronic leg ulcers may develop if this healing is stopped due to issues in the skin and veins.
Varicose veins are generally the underlying issue with leg ulcers. In fact, 80% of those with chronic leg ulcers are also suffering from varicose veins. The disruptions in circulation make healing the affected area more difficult, allowing the ulcer to persist.

Leg Ulcer Treatment

Treatment for leg ulcers is similar to conservative varicose vein treatments. Elevating the limbs, wearing compression hose or stockings, and applying bandages can heal leg ulcers. While these can promote healing for leg ulcers, varicose veins require further treatment to be completely corrected. If your varicose veins remain, you could potentially struggle with ulcers again.
